We had such a good experience at the PMI’s Synergy 2011 event – customers decended our book display, and a whole raft of Gower authors were on hand to sign their books - that’s why we are delighted to will be exhibiting again at Synergy 2012 (1st November 2012). This year’s event is, once again, at the Indigo O2. This is absolutely a project management event that lives up to its name: it’s a real synergy of ideas, people and time. If you’re involved in project management then do come along and, if you do, make sure you spend some time at the Gower book exhibit!

Gower Author Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez will be speaking at CA World 2011 on: ‘Demand and Portfolio Management: From Ideas through Implementation at BNP Paribas Fortis.’
Nieto-Rodriguez explains how BNP Paribas Fortis came to understand that to remain competitive they had to optimize their project selection and project execution capabilities. He covers how they turned ideas about development and improvement into reality, complying with external constraints, renewing assets and establishing new projects. He discusses why BNP Paribas Fortis chose to implement Demand Management and Portfolio Management software and shares lessons learned. He includes, how they overcame: – resistance from the different entities on new processes; poor quality of project data; disconnect between the regular budgeting cycle and the portfolio management – and low maturity in terms of capacity management. The session would be useful for for both CA Clarity PPM users, and those considering the use of PPM.

The Portfolio Management Summit 2011 is being held at The Hotel Intercontinental in Sao Conrado, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on the 4th, 5th and 6th of October. A keynote speaker is Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez, Professor in Strategic Business Management and Head of Transversal Portfolio Management, and author of the forthcoming Gower book The Focused Organization.

One of its great strengths is its value as a platform for shared discussion; it offers a very user-friendly and unthreatening way to engage anyone who needs to be involved in the strategy discussion. Just a last minute reminder about the Association of Project Management Conference which is this Thursday (21st October in Central London). The conference programme showcases Gower authors: Stephen Jenner (Transforming Government and Public Services) is speaking on Portfolio Management; David Hancock (Tame, Messy and Wicked Risk Leadership) on Rethinking Risk and Project Management, Michael Cavanagh (2nd Order Project Management) is the closing speaker and, Darren Dalcher, (Series Editor Advances in Project Management and Fundamentals of Project Management) is giving the welcome address and setting the scene.
I heard Michel Thiry (Program Management) present recently for the London Branch of PMI on Program Management: The Four Key Components (Governance, Decision Management, Stakeholder Management and Benefits Management). Michel has a gift for offering a perspective on program management that is both sophisticated and entirely sensible. I am sure that the audience, who were very responsive, went away with a number of mental models that will change the way they understand the relationship of programs, projects, portfolios and the corporate strategy that underpins them all. If you haven’t heard Michel speak, then I urge you to take advantage of one of his forthcoming presentations to go and listen to him. He’s presenting on Project -Based Organizations on 15th and 16th September in Las Vegas, for PMI; on 20th September he’s talking to the PMI UK, North and Midlands Chapter, on Program Management, Beyond Standards and Guides; and he’ll also be talking on program management at the PMI North American 2010 Global Congress in Washington between 6th and 9th October.
Surely the first clause in the law of unintended consequences relates fairly and squarely to metrics. There can be no other area of management practice that is so important and yet is so often the cause of, sometimes business critical, unintended consequences. I have not seen Dave Zuckerman speak in public but his book Pharmaceutical Metrics is such as model of pragmatic good sense on what to measure and how to do it that I have no doubt he’s well worth listening to. He’s chairing the 6th Annual Performance Metrics and Benchmarking Summit in Philadelphia on 20th September.
Michel Thiry’s presentation at the recent National Centre for Project Management Project Experts’ Forum covered a huge amount of ground. Offering insights into the tension between change management and business as usual; the differences between uncertainty and ambiguity (from a project management perspective) and closing with a picture of the role and value of both project and value management (and the importance of integrating the two). I hope I have done his ideas full justice in the notes that I took and which you may download. Michel is author of the forthcoming Program Management.
